New Caledonia's High Commissioner Louis Le Franc stressed on Thursday that the territory had been "brought down to its knees" by rioters, BFM TV reported.
He renewed his call for the unrest in the French Pacific archipelago to end, criticizing citizens who formed "armed militias" to oppose the curfew imposed across the territory, warning that these groups are putting themselves in a "dangerous situation" by doing so.
He vowed to track down assailants who killed three civilians and one police officer, urging them to surrender to authorities.
