Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong (pictured) slammed on Thursday the disqualification of twelve candidates from the Legislative Council elections as a sign of "total disregard for Hong Kongers" and the "biggest ever-crackdown" on the region's pro-democracy movement.
"Beijing tramples upon the city's autonomy and attempts to keep HK's legislature under its firm grip," Wong, one of the leaders of the Hong Kong protests said. He also noted that the government barred "nearly all pro-democracy runners, from young progressive groups to traditional moderate parties."
Earlier in the day, the authorities disqualified twelve candidates, including Wong, from the Legislative Council elections, scheduled for September 6.
