German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated on Tuesday during a press conference with her Austrian counterpart Sebastian Kurz that her government is "committed to [its] local staff in Afghanistan."
Kurz added Vienna is in "very intensive contact" with Afghanistan's neighbors over the exit of those approved for admission in Austria from the crisis-stricken country. Both leaders said their nations increased the volume of humanitarian aid allocated to Afghanistan and urged the international community to do the same.
Earlier in the day, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, who is currently touring Afghanistan's border countries, remarked Berlin will wait for the Taliban to form a government to see if the organization will fulfill its promises.
