Northvolt AB announced on Thursday that it chose Montreal in Canada to open its first fully integrated lithium-ion battery gigafactory outside of Europe whose corporate name will be Northvolt Six. The site will be operative by 2026, after investing a total of $5 billion for the first phase.
The factory will have a fully integrated production process, including 60 GWh of cell manufacturing capacity per year, as well as facilities for "cathode active material production and battery recycling", all on-site. This will enable "fully circular production," making it an environmentally sustainable solution.
"We have in Northvolt Six enormous potential, not only to rapidly expand our ability to bring sustainable batteries into markets of North America but to accelerate Quebec's emergence as a key actor in the global energy transition … We look forward to engagement with all local stakeholders and the province," noted Northvolt Co-Founder Paolo Cerruti
