UK gov't not planning changes to new NI deal

The British government is not planning to request any changes to the Windsor Framework, the proposed upgraded version of the Northern Ireland Protocol it negotiated with the European Union, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's spokesperson told the media on Monday.

The spokesperson insisted that all the parts of the agreement are "set out in the legal text. The EU has no role in deciding whether the brake is used or whether the rule is disapplied. The treaty is clear it is for the people of the UK alone." Commenting on the so-called Stormont Brake included in the deal, they said that "it is up to MLAs [members of the Legislative Assembly] in the Northern Ireland Assembly to decide whether to trigger" it.

Earlier in the day, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) announced it will vote against the Stormont Brake as it "does not deal with the fundamental issue which is the imposition of EU law by the protocol."
