Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday that his country backs the European Union's efforts to bolster member countries' defenses, but stressed that Budapest will oppose the idea of multibillion-dollar loans for these purposes.
"Hungary should not agree to EU countries jointly taking out loans, getting into debt, and driving not only our children but also our grandchildren into financial bondage," Orban said in an interview with the Kossuth radio. He said he will urge Hungarian lawmakers to vote against the plan for EU defense funding at a session to be held before the EU summit, scheduled for March 20, where the issue will be discussed.
Previously, the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the ReArm Europe plan aimed at enhancing the EU's defense capabilities through a €150 billion loan.
