Over 40,000 South Koreans took to the streets on Saturday to protest against the country's President Park Geun-hye, with organizers saying the number of protestors is expected to rise to 100,000. The people gathered in the center of South Korea's capital, Seoul, to request Park's resignation after one of her closest allies, Choi Soon-sil, was detained earlier in the week for alleged fraud and abuse of power.

Park is accused of allowing Choi access to governmentally confidential information, including her speech drafts and other presidential documents. She, however, stated that such actions were made out of “pure” intentions, but admitted she allowed her confidante to edit her speeches. Opposition has already demanded that she steps down.

Smaller protests have already taken place in the country after the scandal emerged.
