Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos (pictures) condemned Sunday China's "illegal and reckless" actions after a Chinese air force aircraft engaged in a "dangerous maneuver" against a Filipino military plane patrolling over Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.
Marcos criticized the Chinese actions as "unjustified" and expressed concern over potential instability in the region. China, however, defended its actions, claiming it was protecting its sovereignty over the disputed reef. The incident highlights the escalating tensions between Manila and Beijing, who have clashed repeatedly over territorial claims in the South China Sea.
The incident involved two Chinese aircraft dropping flares in the path of the Philippine turboprop, putting its crew in danger. Despite the provocation, the patrol plane returned safely.
