The Polish ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party has lost its majority following Sunday's parliamentary elections, according to the final vote count published by the National Electoral Commission on Tuesday. It garnered 35.38% of the total vote and is expected to be unable to form a governing coalition. The three main opposition parties, Civic Platform, Third Way and the Left, received 30.7%, 14.4% and 8.61% respectively, translating to 248 seats in total, with 231 needed for a majority. The turnout hit a record high of 74.38%.
Polish President Andrzej Duda will nominate a candidate for prime minister and is expected to offer the PiS the first opportunity to form a coalition. However, the position is instead likely to go to the Civic Platform's Donald Tusk (pictured), who was prime minister from 2007 to 2014, before going on to serve as European Council president from 2014 to 2019.
