Violent protests erupted in Romania on Sunday after the candidacy of frontrunner Calin Georgescu for the presidential elections was rejected by the Electoral Commission. The candidacy was rejected with 10 votes in favor and 4 against.
"A direct blow to the heart of democracy worldwide! I have one message left! If democracy in Romania falls, the entire democratic world will fall! This is just the beginning. It’s that simple! Europe is now a dictatorship, Romania is under tyranny!" the candidate said in X.
The far-right, NATO-skeptic and Russia fan won the first round of the presidential vote last November with 22.94% of the ballot. However, this victory was short-lived as the Constitutional Court nullified the results under allegations of Russian interference.
