Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed doubts that Germany could serve as a neutral mediator in the Ukraine conflict.
At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025), Putin stated that he dismissed Berlin's ability to be a neutral party, stressing that a mediator must be neutral. He emphasized that "European leaders themselves stopped contacts with Russia when they aimed to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia."However, he added that "if [German Chancellor Friedrich] Merz wants to call, we won't refuse any contacts."
