Russian President Vladimir Putin removed the requirement for foreign buyers of Russian gas to process payments exclusively through Gazprombank, according to an updated decree, published on Thursday that modifies a 2022 regulation that had tied gas transactions to this specific bank.
Gazprombank, previously central to these payments, faced fresh sanctions from the US Treasury on November 21. The new rules now allow gas payments to be processed through other channels, including ruble or foreign currency accounts.
This adjustment appears to be a strategic move to mitigate the impact of international sanctions while maintaining the flow of energy exports.
