Russian President Vladimir Putin predicted on Thursday that gas prices in Europe will increase due to the expected suspension of transit through Ukrainian territory after the new year.

According to Putin, Ukraine's decision not to renew the gas transit contract with Russia which is set to expire on January 1, 2025, is meant to "punish" European countries. Moscow, he said, is willing to continue supplying gas to Europe but noted it is impossible to sign a new deal with Kiev a few days before the new year.

Moreover, the Russian president explained that it is possible to send gas to Europe via Poland. "There is an active route there, no one hit it, there are no explosions, it is working, you just need to turn on the button and that's it. Please turn it on tomorrow - we will supply," he concluded.
