The conflict on the Korean Peninsula must be resolved through diplomatic means, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated on Wednesday his stance on geopolitical tension in south-east Asia.
Although Russia does not recognize North Korea as a nuclear power and considers its weapons tests to be "a blatant violation" of the United Nations Security Council resolutions, the Russian president warned that Pyongyang must no be "cornered," echoing his words from earlier when he said the regime of Kim Jong-un does not feel safe to give up missile and nuclear programs. President Putin rejected as well the possibility of solving the issue with sanctions alone.
Speaking alongside his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in in Vladivostok, Putin said that Russia strongly condemns Pyongyang's latest nuclear test, calling it a threat to regional stability, but once again urged for "a cool head" in dealing with the escalating tension on the Korean Peninsula. Additionally, he told reporters the talk with Moon has been "very open and productive."
