Iridium Communications Inc. revealed that Qualcomm Incorporated's subsidiary Qualcomm Technologies Inc. informed it on November 3 that their agreements on satellite messaging and emergency services in smartphones will be canceled on December 3.
"The companies successfully developed and demonstrated the technology; however, notwithstanding this technical success, smartphone manufacturers have not included the technology in their devices," Iridium noted in a statement. "While I'm disappointed that this partnership didn't bear immediate fruit, we believe the direction of the industry is clear toward increased satellite connectivity in consumer devices," Iridium CEO Matt Desch added.
The company specified that its outlook for the full fiscal 2023 will not be affected by the end of the agreements with Qualcomm.
