Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom asked on Tuesday Prime Minister-elect Liz Truss to form a new government, thus officiating the latter's accession to the position.
Truss thus officially became Britain's third female prime minister, following Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May, who, like her, both led the Conservative Party. Her first meeting with the monarch took place at Balmoral Castle near Aberdeen, Scotland, the first time such a ceremony took place outside Buckingham Palace during Her Majesty's reign.
Later in the day, Truss will address the public for the first time as prime minister. She is also expected to announce the members of her government on that same occasion.
