Around 100 fighters of the Islamic State group (ISIS) have surrendered to the US-led coalition, according to reports from a number of agencies on Saturday. Battles are still ongoing in the city that has been part of an offensive of the US and its allies since June. Some 80% of the city which was the de facto capital of ISIS is now free from the group.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based organization monitoring the Syria war, noted that the some ISIS fighters left Raqqa with their families on Friday and departed to unknown locations. However, the US-led coalition stressed foreign fighters have been forbidden from leaving the city.
Reports suggest that fights in Raqqa are still ongoing, but the number of ISIS fighters has decreased significantly despite the fact that they still hold some strategic points like a stadium believed to be used as a jail and a hospital.
Some 4,000 civilians are estimated to be currently in Raqqa.
