Report: Freddie, Fannie want to end govt control before Trump exit

The federal regulator overseeing Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae is looking to end the government control over the mortgage companies before the end of Donald Trump's presidency, the Wall Street Journal said on Friday.

Mark Calabria, who is the head of the United States Federal Housing Finance Agency, needs Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to complete the effort, people close to the matter told the WSJ, as President-elect Joe Biden is reportedly expected to support the undertaking.

The two mortgage giants were taken over by the government to prevent their collapse in 2008 during the financial crisis.
