American tech giants Google and Microsoft are increasingly shifting production from China to countries in Southeast Asia as the coronavirus outbreak shows no signs of abating, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on Wednesday.
According to sources, Google is looking to start production of its latest smartphone, the Pixel 4A, in northern Vietnam this April, with plans to manufacture the Pixel 5 in the country later in the year as well. Thailand is another country expected to benefit from Google's new plans, including landing the production of the Nest Mini smart speakers.
Additionally, Microsoft is set to start producing some of its notebook and desktop computers in Vietnam. Last year, many tech companies began considering other countries for the manufacturing of their products due to escalating trade tensions between China and the United States, and tariffs that resulted from the dispute.
