Retail sales in Japan down by 0.7% in December

Retail trade in Japan decreased by 0.7% in December compared to the previous month and landed at ¥16.1 trillion (~$104.4 billion), according to a report by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry published on Friday.

On an annual basis, the sales value went up by 3.7%, as the total value of commercial sales reached ¥57.2 trillion, with 3.6% more goods sold compared to December 2023.

Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted value of sales in the wholesale industry reached ¥41 trillion, marking a year-on-year increase of 3.5%.
