White House coordinator for the Middle East Brett McGurk (pictured) shared with a group of think tank experts during a briefing call that returning to the Iran nuclear deal is "highly unlikely," reported Axios on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
According to the sources, McGurk stated that he believes Tehran wants Washington to "add something to the pot," while underlining that the Biden administration refuses to do so, and will continue to impose sanctions against the former "but not needlessly escalate the situation."
The sources said that McGurk emphasized that the US will only resort to using force should every other option fail. Iranian officials previously expressed their will to reach a permanent agreement on the matter, adding that Washington has been the one obstructing the negotiations.
