Manchester City defensive midfielder and Spain national team footballer Rodri was awarded on Monday the 2024 Ballon d'Or. Rodri previously won the Euro 2024 with Spain and was named the best player of that tournament. Barcelona's Aitana Bonmati took the win for the females.
This year's decision was somewhat controversial, as Real Madrid decided to boycott the event after it was revealed in a leak its forward Vinicius Junior wasn't chosen for the award. The Brazilian national, who has been a betting favorite, helped his club claim the Champions League and La Liga titles this year.
Among tonight's winners were also Barcelona's Lamine Yamal, who was awarded the Kopa Trophy, Bayern Munich's Harry Kane and Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe, who both got the Gerd Muller Trophy, and Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez, who won the Yashin Trophy. Real Madrid and Barcelona Femeni took the Men’s Club of the Year and the Women's Club of the Year titles, while Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti and Chelsea's Emma Hayes claimed Men's Coach of the Year and Women's Coach of the Year.
