Romanian president to step down

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced on Monday that he will leave the post to avoid a crisis in the country as the parliament is set to vote for his impeachment.

"To spare Romania and its citizens from this crisis, I am resigning from the office of President of Romania. I will leave office the day after tomorrow, February 12," the president said in a statement.

Iohannis' second and last term expired on December 21, and he has since refused to resign as the country's Constitutional Court ruled that he should remain in office until his successor is elected. The same court annulled the results of the presidential election held in November on suspicions of Russian interference.
