United States Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced on Tuesday that Secret Service Deputy Director Ronald Rowe will assume the role of the agency's acting director following the resignation of Kimberly Cheatle in the aftermath of the attempted assassination of ex-President Donald Trump.
"I appreciate his willingness to lead the Secret Service at this incredibly challenging moment, as the agency works to get to the bottom of exactly what happened on July 13 and cooperate with ongoing investigations and Congressional oversight," Mayorkas stated and added the Secret Service must also continue to provide "24/7 protection for national leaders and visiting dignitaries" and to secure "events of national significance in this dynamic and heightened threat environment."
Cheatle stepped down earlier today after telling Congress on Monday that the shooting at Trump marked the agency's "most significant operational failure."
