United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani to discuss President Donald Trump's decision to end the US sanctions program and national emergency on Syria, according to US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
Rubio said he would review terrorist designations tied to Syria but promised to keep sanctions on those who pose security threats. He described the move as a possible "new chapter" for the Syrian people and relations with the US.
Rubio and al-Shaibani also talked about Iran's influence on the regional and Israel-Syria ties.
