United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday that the drug cartels are a "menace" for both his country and Mexico, claiming that there "has not been enough progress" on the issue of drug trafficking.
"Thousands of Americans dying due to drugs coming from Mexico is unacceptable," Rubio said at the G7 Foreign Ministers session on Maritime Security and Prosperity in Canada, noting that "large parts" of Mexico are "overrun" by the cartels. "Mexicans say the weapons used by cartels are coming from the US, and we are willing to help them contain this problem," he added.
Rubio also stated that the US government has seen "a level of cooperation from the Mexican authorities that we have never seen in the past," but added that it is "not enough."
