Russian Ambassador to Venezuela Sergey Melik-Bagdasarov told RIA Novosti on Monday that the results of the presidential election in the South American country, which showed the victory of the incumbent head of state Nicolas Maduro, are trustworthy.
Melik-Bagdasarov congratulated Maduro as his win means "Venezuela's position in the emerging multipolar world" and added that Moscow will "continue to develop our strategic partnership relations with Caracas." Meanwhile, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel also extended his congratulations.
On the other hand, Costa Rica and Peru joined the group of countries, including the United States, Argentina, and Chile, which dispute the validity of the results. The Venezuelan opposition insists its representative, Edmundo Gonzalez, received 70% of the votes.
