5.2-magnitude quake hits near Papua New Guinea

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 was recorded off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake hit at a depth of 10 kilometers at 10:47 am UTC. The epicenter was registered 193 kilometers west-southwest of Papua New Guinea's town of Lorengau in Manus Province on the edge of the Seeadler Harbour on Manus Island. According to the 2000 census, the town had a population of 5,829. Another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 was registered in the same area at 10:25 am UTC, 198 kilometers west-southwest of Lorengau.

There were no initial reports of casualties or material damages, and no tsunami warning was issued by the US Tsunami Warning Center.
