Russia fines WhatsApp, Snapchat

EPA-EFE/SASCHA STEINBACH ILLUSTRATION

A Russian court fined Meta Platforms Inc's WhatsApp and Snap Inc's Snapchat over what Russia alleges was a refusal on the companies' part to store data of Russian users domestically.

The Moscow court fined WhatsApp $301,255 and Snapchat $16,690, in what was a second fine for the former.

Meta was previously deemed "an extremist platform" by the Russian government, and the country limited access to Meta's Facebook and Instagram, as well as Twitter, after the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

Meta and Snap did not comment on the ruling.
