Moscow's ambassador to Egypt Georgy Borisenko announced on Wednesday that the African country has applied to join the BRICS, the international organization comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Speaking to TASS in an interview, Borisenko explained that Egypt's application came "as one of the initiatives that the BRICS is currently engaged in is the maximum transfer of trade to alternative currencies, whether national or the creation of some kind of a joint currency. Egypt is very interested in this."
Back in July 2022, Purnima Anand, president of the group's affiliate BRICS International Forum, said that Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia expressed willingness to join the BRICS.
