The United States draft resolution on Ukraine is a step in the right direction, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said Monday at the UN General Assembly.
The envoy was referring to a US-crafted proposal introduced on Friday, which is set for a vote later today at the UN. The text acknowledges "the tragic loss of life throughout the Russia-Ukraine conflict" and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities, while Russia proposed an amendment to the text on the need to eliminate "the root causes" of conflict. Every Council resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes by the US, Russia, China, Britain, or France to be adopted.
Washington has reportedly been lobbying against a competing resolution drafted by Ukraine and its European allies, which will also be put to a vote at the General Assembly today. The US resolution will also be voted on in the UN Security Council, where resolutions are binding under international law, unlike the General Assembly resolutions.
