Russian Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Monday that it is "obvious" that Western countries tried to raise tensions in Serbia "using the techniques of Maidan coups."
"Strict adherence to the letter and spirit of the country’s constitution, respect for the choice of the Serbian people, who voted for the national interests of their country, is the only possible reaction," Zakharova told Tass news agency.
On Sunday, Serbian police used tear gas to repel attempts by thousands of protesters to enter the capital's city council building, while Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic claimed it was an organized attack on the country's "independence and sovereignty." The protests began over allegations that the general election held on December 17 was marked by numerous irregularities, and after the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) cited "unjust conditions" and "misuse of public resources" during the vote.
