Russian Ambassador to Romania Valery Kuzmin stated on Wednesday that the embassy was possibly the target of a "terrorist attack" earlier in the day.

Threats have been sent to the embassy before, but this morning's incident is "more difficult to understand" due to "many circumstances," he told Rossiya-24 television.

A car had rammed into the gate of the Russian embassy in Bucharest at 6 am local time, after which it caught fire, killing the driver in the process. According to Romanian media, the driver was sentenced earlier this week to over 15 years in prison over a case of domestic violence.
