Russia's Justice Ministry added Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc. to the government's list of extremist organizations on Friday, introducing yet another measure following a complete ban on the platform earlier this year.
The Russian government banned Meta's Facebook and Instagram social medial platforms countrywide in March weeks after it began the invasion of Ukraine. The reason behind the decision was the tech giant failing to restrict posts calling for violence against the Russian military forces.
In early October, the Russian Federal Financial Monitoring Service (Rosfinmonitoring) added Meta to its list of terrorists and extremists, allowing the government to freeze their assets stored in banks operating within Russia.
