North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary-General Mark Rutte said on Wednesday that there are no plans at the moment for the United States to withdraw its troops from Europe.
"The US is completely committed to NATO, they expect European and Canadian allies to spend much more," Rutte said at a press conference ahead of the Defense Ministers Meeting in Brussels. He insisted that other NATO members have to increase their defense spending in order to "equalize" with the US. "I think that is only fair," he stressed.
Rutte's remarks come after US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker shared that Washington will start discussions with European allies to reduce US troops in Europe later this year.
