South Korean prosecutors on Thursday indicted former President Moon Jae-in (pictured) on bribery charges, though he was not taken into custody, the Jeonju District Prosecutors' Office said.
The charges relate to the 2018 hiring of Moon's former son-in-law, Seo, as an executive at Thai Eastar Jet, a Thailand-based subsidiary of South Korea's Eastar Jet. Prosecutors alleged the appointment was facilitated by former lawmaker Lee Sang-jik, the airline's founder, in return for political favors. They questioned Seo's qualifications, pointing to his background in the gaming industry and lack of aviation experience as evidence of the irregular nature of his hiring.
Lee also faces charges of breach of trust in connection with the case. However, proceedings against Moon's daughter, Moon Da-hye, have been suspended.
