South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun (pictured) vowed Friday to show "no mercy" to threats against the country while stressing that North Korea will face an "overwhelming" response in the event of a provocation.

The remarks came during his visit to the South Korea-US Combined Forces Command (CFC) in Pyeongtaek, where he reaffirmed the strong alliance between the two countries.

CFC Commander Gen. Paul LaCamera briefed Kim, who called for enhanced cooperation between the CFC and South Korea's newly launched Strategic Command. The new command is central to South Korea's extended deterrence plans, which rely on US military capabilities, including nuclear forces, to counter North Korean threats.
