Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. announced on Wednesday that it signed a deal with General Motors Co. to establish a joint electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in the United States.
Samsung and GM will invest approximately $3.5 billion in the plant which will have an annual production capacity of 27 gigawatt hours (GWh) "initially." The factory is targeting mass production in 2027, while its annual capacity is expected to rise to 36GWh "under following expansion plans."
The joint plant will be located in New Carlisle, Indiana, and will create over 1,600 jobs according to a statement by Samsung SDI.
