Samsung Electronics' union in South Korea, representing more than 28,000 staff or 20% of the workforce, announced on Wednesday that they will go on strike for the first time on June 7 amid complaints of work "repression."
Although the initial strike is scheduled for one day, it could be extended and eventually affect semiconductor production. During the announcement, the union spokesperson said to "have tried to solve the issue through dialogue." "We are declaring a strike in the face of the company's neglect of laborers […] Responsibility for all collective action from now lies squarely on the company. We are declaring our stance in the face of the company's neglect and interference in our peaceful struggle so far," the representative added.
On the other hand, a Samsung Electronics official told AFP that the company "will keep in dialogue with the labor union going forward as it has been."
