Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 FIFA men's World Cup the organization's ruling body announced on Wednesday, marking the first time the Middle Eastern monarchy will be organizing the most prestigious football competition in the world.
The outcome was expected, as Saudi Arabia was the sole bidder, and the decision to entrust Riyad with the organization of one of the biggest sporting events worldwide was reached by acclamation. On the other hand, human rights organizations criticized the decision due to the country's human rights track record.
The 2034 FIFA World Cup will be the competition's 25th edition, with Spain, Portugal, and Morocco expected to host the tournament in 2030.
