German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin "failed across the board in Ukraine," adding that the war-torn country is on its way to EU membership.
"It has a strong army, equipped by us, which is defending itself heroically against Putin's troops," Scholz said about Ukraine in an interview with T-Online. "The task now is to create the basis for a fair and sustainable peace." Scholz also defended his recent phone conversation with the Russian president in which he said he conveyed to him that the war in Ukraine must end and also reiterated Germany's military support to Kiev. " It was important to me that Putin also listens to my view of his war,” Scholz stressed.
At the same time, Scholz opposed the proposition to send Ukraine Taurus cruise missiles to prevent the war from escalating into a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.
