Outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on Sunday that he will not participate in possible future coalition talks between the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

Scholz told ARD and ZDF that he has no plans to represent the government in any future negotiations with the CDU. He earlier commented on the ruling's party election performance, calling it a "bitter" loss for SPD. At the same time, he said he would stay as chancellor until the formation of the new government.

According to preliminary election results with 9 of 299 constituencies declared, SPD won 11.2% while CDU secured 35.4% of the vote, with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) obtaining 25.7%.
