Outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday hailed the idea of a 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, adding that it is a significant move for securing a just peace.

"The idea of a 30-day ceasefire is an important and appropriate step towards a just peace for Ukraine. We stand with Ukraine and the USA and welcome the proposals from Jeddah. Now it is up to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin," Scholz said in a post on X.

The day before, Ukraine agreed to a 30-day ceasefire along the entire front line after a meeting between US and Ukrainian delegations in Saudi Arabia, and US President Donald Trump expressed hope that Russia would accept the ceasefire proposal.
