United States Senator from Iowa Chuck Grassley (pictured), who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, launched an inquiry over UnitedHealth Group Inc.'s Medicare billing practices, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) revealed on Tuesday, citing a letter he forwarded to the company's CEO, Andrew Witty.
"The apparent fraud, waste, and abuse at issue is simply unacceptable and harms not only Medicare beneficiaries, but also the American taxpayer," the senator wrote, pointing out findings from various WSJ articles released during 2024. In the letter, he requested that the firm provide training manuals and guidance documents related to specific practices that could require extra payments. UnitedHealth was also asked to deliver details on its compliance program, audit results, and lists of software used, among other things.
In a statement, the business said it welcomes the chance to "share the facts with Senator Grassley, especially given the ongoing misinformation campaign by" the WSJ.
