Senate confirms Xavier Becerra as HHS secretary

The United States Senate voted on Thursday to confirm California Attorney General Xavier Becerra (pictured) as the country's next secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).

A total of 50 senators supported US President Joe Biden's nominee in a close vote with Senator Susan Collins of Maine being the only Republican to back the confirmation, while 49 lawmakers voted against naming Becerra the HHS Department's head.

Becerra has been serving as the attorney general of California since January 2017, while he previously chaired the House of Representatives Democratic Caucus between 2013 and 2017.
