Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Tuesday that he will adhere to the 30-day legal deadline to allow for the formation of a new government following Prime Minister Milos Vucevic's resignation or call parliamentary elections if unsuccessful.
The president underscored that the move has been "unforeseen" and announced that he will hold talks with all parties involved in the following days. Disregarding calls to establish a transitional government, Vucic blamed "external factors" for putting additional pressure on the country.
Mass protests which saw students block the University of Belgrade in totality for almost two months, with many other academic institutions following suit, erupted after an overhang collapsed in Novi Sad on November 1, killing 15. The situation escalated as multiple incidents in recent weeks left protesters injured, with students continuing to demand systemic reforms in Serbia.
