Shanghai banned entry into the city for all people and cars, authorities said in a statement on Thursday. The measures were taken to control the coronavirus outbreak and implementation started at midnight local time on February 14.
Shanghai has at least 300 confirmed cases of the virus and one death.
However, fears exist globally that the real numbers of people with COVID-19 are significantly larger, with US officials stressing they do not trust the Chinese official figures.
