Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Thursday that her country avoided the tariff hike that US President Donald Trump had planned for Friday, August 1, after he granted Mexico an additional 90 days to negotiate a trade deal.
"We had a very good call with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. We avoided the tariff increase announced for tomorrow and secured 90 days to build a long-term agreement through dialogue," she wrote on X.
According to a letter released this month, Mexico was subject to a 30% tax starting on August 1, up from the original 25% with USMCA [United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement] imports exempted. Nonetheless, the US will maintain its "25% Fentanyl Tariff, 25% Tariff on Cars, and 50% Tariff on Steel, Aluminum, and Copper," according to Trump.
Tuvimos una muy buena llamada con el presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump. Evitamos el aumento de aranceles anunciado para mañana y logramos 90 días para construir un acuerdo de largo plazo a partir del diálogo.
