Singapore is set to head to the polls on May 3, marking the initial electoral challenge for newly appointed Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. The Nomination Day, in which candidates will file their election papers will be on April 23.
The nine-day electoral period is likely to focus on key issues including inflation, residential development, employment opportunities, and increasing medical care requirements for the nation's elderly demographic. The People's Action Party (PAP) is predicted to maintain its governing position. The party has secured every election since Britain granted Singapore its autonomy in 1959.
Earlier, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam dissolved the parliament following Wong's recommendation, as stated in an announcement from the Prime Minister's Office.
