SoftBank Group Corp. is supposedly "in talks" to invest up to $25 billion into OpenAI, the Financial Times reported, citing multiple people with direct knowledge of the negotiations.
The report comes after the two companies announced last week they would be teaming up on the $500 billion-worth artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure project. The project, dubbed Stargate, would see the joint venture spending $100 billion on it, with the figure coming to $500 billion over the next four years. SoftBank is now discussing a direct $15-25 billion investment into OpenAI, after reports claimed that both companies plan to commit $19 billion each to Stargate. SoftBank's investment into OpenAI could cover the ChatGPT maker's commitment to Stargate, multiple sources told the news agency.
"The talks are ongoing and the amount that SoftBank could invest in primary equity into OpenAI is a moving target," one person familiar with the matter told the news agency.
